THE CHAIRMAN of Lancashire County Council has presented a cheque for over £1,500 to a local charity which raises money for research into cancer.

The much-needed money was raised at a dinner organised by County Councillor Chris Holtom to mark Lancashire Day.

Ribble Valley and White Rose Ladies, a charity that carries out fundraising specifically for research into childhood cancers, received the donation of £1620.09 from Chris Holtom, Chairman of Lancashire County Council during afternoon tea earlier today at County Hall.

The money raised by RV&WRL will go towards the charity's work which, in addition to providing invaluable services to children with cancer and their families, also funds the work of Professor Jillian Birch, who is a research scientist and director of the Cancer Research UK Paediatric and Familial Cancer Research Group at the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

The dinner took place on November 18 at the Mytton Fold Hotel and Golf Complex in the Ribble Valley. It was attended by the High Sheriff of Lancashire, civic dignitaries and representatives from the business community.

Speaking to representatives of the charity, County Councillor Holtom said: "It was a wonderful evening. I particularly enjoyed it because it enabled civic leaders and dignitaries, the business community and friends of the county to get together in a pleasant atmosphere.

"I would like to thank Lancashire County Developments Ltd, Euravia Engineering and Supply Ltd, EV Group, Pannone LLP and Moore & Smalley, Chartered Accountants for hosting tables for the business community."

"I was hugely impressed that, even during these tough times, businesses in Lancashire have been prepared to show their support for this worthy cause by donating so generously."

Karen Mendoros, Chairman of Ribble Valley and White Rose Ladies, added: "There is huge competition from countless worthwhile charities seeking fundraising support within Lancashire so we are tremendously grateful to Chris Holtom for choosing to support our cause.

"The Lancashire day dinner was a highly entertaining event and to have raised such an impressive amount of money for our charity in the process, is simply wonderful.

"We are very grateful not only to the Chairman and organisers of the evening but also to the big-hearted guests and dignitaries who attended."
